MAPLEWOOD, NJ – The Maplewood Green Team has announced that it will kick off Maplewood’s Adopt-A-Park Site program at Maplewood Green Day on Saturday, April 27. The Green Team is looking for volunteers to help keep the village’s parks clean through this new program which will enlist families and organizations to “adopt” and clean small portions of a park at least once per month.
Maplewood's six public parks have been divided into small areas that would take a small group about an hour to clear of trash. The GreenTeam will recognize participating groups on the www.MaplewoodIsGreen.org website.
Eric Burbank, Director of the Maplewood Department of Public Works said in a prepared release, "Our staff can't be everywhere, so our Adopt-A-Park Site volunteers will help keep the parks clean. We will work closely with them. I look forward to seeing how the program grows."
Benjamin Kubany, 13, of Maplewood has a keen interested in the environment and is helping to sign up Maplewood families. “Trash is an enormous problem, here in Maplewood and all around the world. We have to start locally by getting trash out of our parks and restoring their beauty,” he said. Each group that adopts a park section must have at least one adult over the age of 18 who will be present during cleanups.
At the Maplewood Green Day booth, there will be sign-up sheets and complete maps for the sites available for adoption at Memorial Park, Walter Park, Maplecrest Park, Orchard Park, Dehart Park, and Milo Borden Park.
The Green Team plans to expand the program to include other public spaces in Maplewood after the park sites are assigned. To volunteer for the Maplewood Adopt-A-Park Site program, you may e-mail Green Team member, email@example.com or sign up at the booth on Maplewood Green Day.
