Managing Your Move, Part Two: Moving Into Your New Home

In my last blog post, I talked about how to make your move easier. After a long wait, you finally found your dream house, and are excited to move in. Now, it is time to organize all your belongings and move them into your new property. But how can you do it without being overwhelmed? Just like packing your home can be stressful; preparing your new one can be stressful as well. Here are some tips for making the transition into your new home a little easier:
Non-breakable plates, bowls, and utensils. It’s nice to not worry about storing your regular dishes somewhere where they can accidentally get knocked over (and with boxes everywhere, chances of this happening are high). Picnic-ware is great until you get out your dishes and put them away.
Make a designated spot for flashlights, keys, and cell phones. Amidst the chaos, these things are easily lost. Claim one counter or shelf as the place for all of these things.
Determine how space in your new home will be used. Remember, the room should be functional as well as ascetically pleasing. If you're arranging the living room, for instance, will the area be used as a family room and a place where you'll entertain guests? If so, perhaps consider how the room can be divided or if furniture can serve dual purposes.
Check all major appliances and electronics to ensure nothing was damaged during the move. Your insurance policy may have a limited time in which to make a claim. Since these are big ticket items, you should make sure they're all working.
Buy a subscription to the local newspaper or community magazine. This will quickly get you up to speed on what's happening in your neighborhood.
Get a library card! One for each member of the family. Once you have a library card, you can consider yourself, home!
Remember, moving into a new home is supposed to be a happy time. The hardest part is getting everything packed up and then moving it in. As a real estate agent I have seen so many families move. People are happiest when they find their dream home, but get stressed out when it’s time to move into it. Take your time and enjoy the process!
