PATERSON, NJ - Police are investigating the stabbing of a 28-year-old man Wednesday in an attack they believe happened near the corner of Broadway and E. 23rd Street.

Authorities learned of the incident when police officers on patrol were making a traffic stop on an unrelated matter near Summer Street and 16th Avenue. A woman approached the officers and told them she had found a man with a stab wound near the corner of 12th Avenue and E. 23rd Street, according to Sgt. Bert Ribeiro.

The man, a resident of E. 23rd Street, had a wound near his ribs and is in stable condition at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, police said.

Authorities say they are still trying to determine the circumstances of the stabbing.
