CHATHAM, NJ – The Madison wrestling team was able to get five pins, scoring 30 points in that amount of final bouts in the 138, 145, 152, 160 and 170 pound weight class, to come away with a 59-16 victory over Chatham on Thursday night at Chatham High School.
With Madison up 29 to 13, an exciting bout at the 133 pound weight class took place between Chatham’s Dylan Mulcany and Madison’s John Costa.
Before the match started Costa was called for a technical violation for having tape on his headgear; thus awarding Mulcany a point. Costa then earned a point in the second round as he got to a neutral position after starting the round down on the mat.
The third round saw exciting action as Mulcany got a reversal and Costa got a take down to knot things up at three apiece. In the last seconds of the match Mulcany was able to escape from Costa’s grip after being down on the mat to earn an exciting 4-3 decision.
“Mulcany is wrestling real well. He’s won two tournaments,” Chatham Head Coach Brian Cassera said of his 132-pounder.
The tide swung in Madison’s favor after that match up.
In the 138 pound match, Chatham’s Justin Engel earned the first five points when he earned a take down and a near fall against Madison’s Max Gotsch in the first round.
However, after that, Gotsch was able to take down Engel and then pin him with a half nelson to give Madison six points.
The last four bouts were thoroughly dominated by Madison as Juan Giraldo pinned Chatham’s Joe Donofrio with a 3/4 nelson. The final three bouts saw the away team earn a total of four take downs and earning a pin fall in each to put away the match.
“Obviously it’s a good win for us. The middle of our lineup is our strongest. We thought we’d pick up some steam there, and it worked out like we thought it would,” Madison Head Coach Steve Healey said.
Madison won the 182 and 106 pound bouts by forfeit as Chatham could not fill the spots due to injuries and sicknesses, according to Cassera.
Neil Sullivan won the 195 pound match for Madison when he pinned Chatham’s Nick Haboj early in the first round.
Then Madison’s Donovan Mantone pinned Taylor Boehmer of Chatham in the 220 pound matchup 58 seconds into the final round.
Tom Penn won the first match of the night for Chatham when he defeated Madison’s Steve Finelli 1-0 after earning an escape in the final round of the 285 pound matchup.
Chatham’s other two victories came at the 113 pound weight class when Geoffrey Zorn won an 18-6 decision over Madison’s Tsering Thakuri and at the 120 pound weight class when Sean Coyne pinned Madison’s David Schuckman midway through the first round.
Madison’s Patsy Davis earned a 16-0 decision over Chatham’s David Lappin in the 126 pound bout.
Madison is next scheduled to compete in a four team meet against Millburn, Morris Hill and DePaul this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Millburn High School.
Chatham is next scheduled for a tri match against Barringer and Mountain Lakes this Saturday at 9 a.m. in Newark.
