MT. OLIVE, NJ—Donovan Mantone will represent Madison High School as the only wrestler to qualify for the Morris County Tournament semifinals at Mt. Olive High School this afternoon.
Mantone is the third seed in the 220-pound weight class; the Dodger wrestler improved his record to 17-5 after defeating Kinnelon’s Dave Locasio this morning. Mantone scored a takedown in the first period for a 2-0 lead, but quickly gave up an escape for one point. Locasio chose bottom in the second period and again earned a quick escape, this time to tie up the score. Mantone threw a headlock, pinning his opponent 25 seconds into the second period.
The 220 lb Madison wrestler will compete against Randolph’s Zak Kazaba in the semifinal round.
John Costa (132-lbs.) and Michael Baumgartner (285-lbs.) of Madison lost their quarterfinal matches, but will have the opportunity to earn fifth place in the wrestle back consolations. Costa suffered a loss to Delbarton’s top seeded Nick Anderson, but will attempt to redeem himself against Hanover Park’s Joe Zecca.
Baumgartner lost 2-1 against A.J. Willard of Jefferson in a match that went a full eight minutes, going into double overtime. Both wrestlers received escapes during the first three periods and entered the first overtime period with a score of 1-1. Neither grappler scored a takedown during the first OT, so Baumgartner started on bottom in the second overtime. He was unable to earn an escape or reversal; Willard escaped during his start on bottom to win the match. Baumgartner will face West Morris’s Scott Deboey in the wrestle backs.
The first consolation rounds begin at 1:00 pm, and the semifinals will follow after.
