MADISON, NJ - A loss to Lyndhurst in the NJSIAA Section 2, Group 2 final on Friday afternoon brought the Madison varsity softball season to a close.
Madison had taken a seven-game winning streak into the title game before falling, 3-2. The Dodgers had an early 2-0 lead, but Lyndhurst pushed across single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to overtake Madison.
Despite the loss, the Dodgers' season was a success, with an 18-5 record and a strong season by junior pitcher Stephanie Deeb, who struck out 117 batters and walked just 27 in 116 1/3 innings with an earned-run average below 2.00.
Sophomore outfielder Alyssa DeBiasse batted .414 for Madison, which also got key offensive contributions from senior infielder Alise Bassolino, who batted .377 with 10 extra-base hits and two home runs; junior first baseman Jill Caruso, who batted .304 with six doubles and 15 runs scored; senior outfielder Jessica Epstein, who batted .365 with 11 extra-base hits; senior infielder Mackie Goodwin, who batted .314 with 11 extra-base hits; freshman infielder Caitlyn Massaro, who batted .386; and junior catcher Kristina Qualben, who batted .393 and paced the team with three home runs.
With so many integral contributors to this year's 18-win season returning, 2015 figures to be a season in which Madison's softball team can build on what it accomplished this spring.
