MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The Madison High School ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Mt. Olive on Saturday night at Mennen Arena.
Once the puck dropped for the first time, Mt. Olive was able to get it to Madison’s goaltender on their first shot.
After the initial save, the Dodgers were able to get the puck settled and tried to keep possession.
Within the first period, Mt. Olive was able to get a shot off when Casey DeLarenzo scored.
Six minutes later, Madison’s Michael Gleason was found the back of the net. Less than a minute later, Gleason broke through the defense again and fired a shot beyond the reach of Mt. Olive’s net-minder, giving Madison a 2-1 lead.
The beginning of the second period was tough for both sides. They kept getting shots off but couldn’t seem to find the net until Mt. Olive’s Ethan Hendrickson was able to get a goal with only six minutes left in the second period.
Gleason responded with his third goal of the game, regaining the one point advantage for the Dodgers.
With Madison leading Mt. Olive 3-2 going into the third period, pressure built for Mt. Olive to tie the game. Midway through the final period, they did just that, as DeLarenzo found the back of the net for the second time, tying the game at 3-3.
Despite late efforts from both sides, the goal lamp never lit up again, as the game ended in a draw.
Gleason, who had a hat trick, described Madison’s play as “good” and he also added that they got what they had to do “done” in the last period.
“It was disappointing to be up in the third period and to go down and end up with a tie,” Madison head coach Dave Hansen said. “The boys played an outstanding game considering we were down a few guys tonight.”
Madison will be playing rival Park on Wednesday night at Mennen Arena.
