MADISON, NJ - Chief Darren Dachisen would like to extend his appreciation to the many Madisonians who provided information concerning a motor vehicle crash occurring yesterday evening, August 14, on Park Avenue at approximately 8:45 pm. Dachisen noted that the collaborative effort between the Police Department and the community helped to “take a dangerous intoxicated driver off our streets.”

Patrolman Luis Goncalves responded to the motor vehicle accident, but enroute he observed a Mercedes Benz approaching from the opposite direction passing and nearing closely to his police vehicle. Goncalves arrived at the scene of the Park Avenue crash and was told by witnesses that the Mercedes Benz, which was the car the officer had just passed, was the car involved in the accident.

Patrolman Goncalves and Sargeant Perrelli pursued the suspected vehicle and stopped the driver on Condurso Way.  The driver was not responsive to the police officers directives but was safely removed from the vehicle.  Presumed intoxicated, the driver, Mark Marinello, 47, of the Logang District, Schenen China, had his pants down around his ankles with an open bottle of vodka in the car.  Marinello was taken into custody, processed at police headquarters, and he was eventually released to a family member.

It was also noted that as Marinello was travelling east on Park Avenue, he struck curbs, signs, bushes and a parked car.  When Marinello’s vehicle came to a rest on a Park Avenue lawn, a citizen tried to stop Marinello completely, but he continued to drive, fleeing the scene and crashed into the parked car.

For the following offenses, Marinello was issued the following summons:  DWI, DWI in a school zone open container, careless driving, reckless operation, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, failure to maintain a lane and driving on a sidewalk.

Allegedly, Marinello was three times over the legal drinking limit.  He has a pending court date in the Madison Municipal Court.  All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
