Madison Hotel to Celebrate Purim March 16

Friday, February 28, 2014 • 2:22pm

The Jewish holiday of Purim will be celebrated with a Grand Purim Party at 5 pm Sunday, March 16, at The Madison Hotel, at 1 Convent Road at the corner of Madison Avenue in the Convent Station section of Morris Township.

The celebration will include a 5pm reading of the “Megillah,” a scroll describing the story of Purim, with a simultaneous holiday slide show, followed by a 5:30 pm party, featuring a Chinese buffet dinner, lively music, live entertainment, and a parade and prizes for all children.

Everyone is welcome to attend in costume, as is customary on Purim. A suggested donation of $18 for adults and $9 for children is requested, and Purim Party Sponsorships are available for $100. College students are welcome at no charge.

The Madison-based Chabad Center of Southeast Morris County is organizing the party. Rabbi Shalom Lubin noted that Purim, “The Festival of Lots,” commemorates “the salvation of the Jewish people from the evil tyrant Haman in ancient Persia in the year 356 B.C.E. This riveting yet true epic of palace intrigue took place under the rule of King Achashverosh, or Xerxes. The Jewish People, led by the heroes of the holiday, Mordechai and Esther, overcame the evil Haman and triumphed because of their active unity and commitment to their identity as a practicing Jewish community,” Lubin said.

Traditional customs on Purim include the reading of the “Megillah,” giving charity to the poor, giving gifts of food to friends and family, and eating a festive meal. Traditional Purim foods include “hamantashen,” a three-cornered cookie with filling said to resemble the hat worn by the evil Haman.

“Purim is a fun holiday. We dress up, we commemorate our traditions, and we celebrate with friends. Our party will be geared both to adults and children, and I’m looking forward to a really exciting evening,” said Lubin.

Chabad of Southeast Morris County also will stage Purim programs at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities, bringing joy to the elderly in the spirit of the holiday.
