On Wednesday, January 25 four students from Madison High School went to Central Avenue School, Kings Road School, and Torey J. Sabitini School to give presentations about cancer prevention and their upcoming Day of Service project.

This project is a Mini-Relay for Life, to be held at each school. The students giving the presentations were Nicole Zara, Sina Alhuesseini, and Kathy Meyer, juniors at Madison High School, and Marleigh Fruehling, a sophomore at Madison High School.

The presentations were an extension of the Mini-Relay for Life, to energize the students and help them understand the impact of their participation. Not only were the elementary students inspired, but so were the high school students.

“The Mini-Relay for Life is not only an amazing fundraiser but it makes me feel great to see the kids smile and have fun, while also learning about cancer,” said Sina Alhuesseini. Nicole Zara added, “Mini-Relay for Life gives the students the opportunity to join the fight against cancer in a fun way. As a member of Tommy’s Angels for the past four years, I’m excited to help mentor these young students as they celebrate, remember, and fight back.”

A Mini-Relay for Life is a shortened version of the actual Relay for Life event that happens at Madison High School on June 23-24. Students walk with their classes, usually during their gym period. The classes are split to play games half the time and to walk half the time. This way there are constantly students walking the track. Students can honor those who they know that have died or survived of cancer by participating in this event, and they are also given the option of raising money for the American Cancer Society.

This year there will be Mini-Relays held at the Madison Junior School, Kings Road School, Torey J. Sabitini School, Central Avenue School, Saint Vincent Martyr School, and the Harding Township School. Each Mini-Relay will take place on June 1.

The students who gave the presentation and will be running the Mini-Relays for Life are part of Tommy’s Angels Relay for Life team. Tommy’s Angels was started in 2009 in support of Tommy Sych, a local teen and cancer survivor. Our Team has been participating in Relay for Life for three years running, and in those years it has raised over $10,000 for cancer research and prevention.

Relay for Life is a fourteen hour walk-a-thon that takes place at Madison High School on June 23rd to 24th. Teams walk the track during that time and celebrate those that have survived. Please remember those loved ones who have lost their lives, and fight back against cancer.
