On Sunday, May 20th Martial Arts for life held Black Belt testing at the New Providence Recreation Center. Eleven students earned their first degree Black Belt and five students earned their second degree Black Belt. The graduates ranged in age from 9 year old youngsters to adults in their 40s.

The Black Belt exam consisted of physical fitness requirements which included a timed two mile run, performance of sit-ups and push-ups and multiple rounds of sparring or “free fighting” while wearing protective equipment. Students were also required to perform their entire martial arts curriculum from beginner to advanced level without mistakes. Children high school age or younger were required to have a “B” average in school as part of their academic requirements.

“This was an excellent group of graduates. We had students in this group that have been training with us since they were as young as three and four years old! It’s truly amazing to see the progress, growth, and change in these students since beginning their martial arts training,” said Rich Brugger, who co-owns Martial Arts For Life with his wife Michelle. Co-owner Michelle Brugger added, “It’s been an absolute pleasure to watch these students grow-up during their training with us. We are incredibly proud of their achievement of Black Belt.”
