The Dalarna-Blaklockan Scandinavian Children’s Club, part of Lodge Linne #429 of the Vasa Order of America, is seeking families with children ages three to fifteen who are interested in learning about their Scandinavian heritage.  Beginning on Sunday, October 14, the group will meet weekly at the New Providence Memorial Library (377 Elkwood Avenue) in the late afternoon to learn about their heritage and some simple folk dances.

During the weekly meetings, the group learns about the various Scandinavian cultures of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.  In addition to learning about the countries, the boys and girls learn simple folk dances, which are later performed for the public at two events – Lodge Linne’s Scandinavian Import Sale at Salt Brook Elementary School in New Providence on November 17 and the December 9 Santa Lucia Christmas program, which is being held this year at the Madison Community House.  The Santa Lucia program celebrates the shortest and darkest day of the winter by brightening it with light and welcoming in the Christmas season in honor of Saint Lucia.

“Presently, the children in our club have ties to a variety of the Scandinavian countries.  The purpose of the club is to bring the children together and learn about their heritage in a fun and inviting way.  We keep some of the traditions alive by performing a Lucia pageant each December and learning traditional country folk dances,” stated Erica Johansson-Neil, coordinator of Dalarna-Blaklockan Children’s Club.
