FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Even though New Jersey’s high school baseball season ended over a week ago, the top players in the state had one last opportunity to don their school colors in a more relaxed setting.

The New Jersey Scholastic Baseball Coaches Association hosted the top 100 players in the state at Diamond Nation in Flemington for their annual All-Star Classic.

The top 25 players from each region in the state (Northeast, Northwest, Central and South) competed in a 9-inning exhibition to showcase their talents one more time as a high school athlete.

“Its something to strive for,” Gov. Livingston senior outfield Ryan Jennings said on making the game. “You always want to be a top player in your area, county, group and state. Its something you work for as a goal no matter where you are. “

Jennings, who was a part of the Highlanders group championship during his freshman year, was more than ecstatic to play as a high school student-athlete one last time.

“I was definitely pretty happy to put on a Highlander uniform again and play for [Gov. Livingston head coach Chris] Roof one more time,” Jennings said. “That was definitely exciting.”

Jennings was one of the many players in the game who will be competing at the college level next year. The senior outfielder will patrol a corner spot in the Fordham University outfield next spring.

He joined rival players from across the Union County foes on the Northwest team in a game against the south. Westfield star pitcher Brad DeMartino and catcher Mike Ionta made the squad, as did Scotch Plains-Fanwood infielder Christian Zazzali.

Jennings said it was a strange feeling playing alongside local rivals.

“It definitely is strange being in a game with guys you go up against during the season,” he said. “It's a pretty cool experience playing with guys who are great players for other teams.”
