Local children's book author Debbie Doctofsky-Solomon shares knowledge about Vietnam and Nepal through her multicultural children's books, "Journey to the River of Perfumes" and "Hidden in the Himalayas." After more than a dozen school visits in and around the area, Debbie's books are in the hands of nearly 500 children.

"Parents and teachers want their young children to learn to appreciate others cultures and children's literature seems to be a great conduit to obtain that goal," says Solomon.

Debbie writes based on her travel experiences blending fact and fiction to help children understand complex information about other countries on their level in our ever-shrinking world. With an action packed summer vacation mapped out in Nicaragua, Debbie plans to make this vibrant Central American country the backdrop for book three in her expanding collection called "Expeditions in Learning."

In June, Debbie will visit the children at the Redeemer School in Westfield and then she has a charity event by a national organization called "Mocha Moms" on June 14 from 1 p.m.  to 3 p.m. at D. Lindsay Salon, located at 232 South Avenue in Fanwood, NJ, kicking off this year's Boys Booked on Barbershops/Girls Booked on Beauty Shops event. This is an initiative to help foster a love of reading, improve literacy skills, and build positive self-acceptance through opportunities to read a wide variety of multicultural books.

Also in June, InCultureParent, an online magazine for parents raising little global citizens, will review “Hidden in the Himalayas." In addition, Oi Vietnam, an expat online magazine in Ho Chi Minh City that caters to the expat community, will review “Journey to the River of Perfumes."

We look forward to seeing Debbie at more schools & events in and around our community in the near future! And don’t forget to support local authors! To contact Debbie you can visit her at debbiesolomon.com.
