LIVINGSTON, NJ - Livingston resident Hanna Anderson has a special place in her heart for The Valerie Fund, an organization that works to raise funds for kids with cancer and blood disorders—The Valerie Fund was her great aunt Hanna’s designated choice for donation when she passed away in 1990.

As a first-time team captain in June of 2012, Anderson raised funds for the Annual Valerie Fund Walk-a-Thon, with a walking team of three people. Two weeks later, her grandmother was diagnosed with cancer and named the Valerie Fund as her choice for donation. She passed away that September.

In 2013, with her grandmother as her inspiration, Anderson raised almost $2,000 and brought more than 15 walkers to the team for the June Walk-a-Thon.

Wanting to do more than just participate in the walking events, Anderson is now collecting for the Valerie Fund’s “Gifts in Kind” program. Through this program, The Valerie Fund Children's Centers offer children a number of therapeutic items designed to help them learn about their disease through play. In addition, the program provides toys and games to entertain and distract the young patients, which helps them to pass the time during treatments or while they are waiting to see doctors.

Along with the Children's Centers, The Valerie Fund runs a camp called Camp Happy Times, which is a free one-week overnight camp experience for children ages 5-21, who have or have had cancer. There is also a need for items for this camp.

It is Anderson’s hope that she can collect enough donations to help make those children that are struggling with their illnesses forget about them for a while, and enjoy periods of normalcy that most kids take for granted.
