Livingston Lancers Hockey Team Tops West Orange, 8-1

LIVINGSTON, NJ - After a heartbreaking loss to Montclair-Kimberley Academy just a few nights before, the Livingston Lancers ice hockey team took to the ice looking to get back on track against the West Orange Mountaineers. However, this West Orange team was not the same four-win team from a year ago. The Mountaineer squad made huge improvements from last season and put up a fight at Richard J. Codey Arena.
Livingston was without star forward Tal Finberg, but even without his quickness and puck handling, the Lancers were able to hold off the Mountaineers. Just minutes after the puck dropped, West Orange senior captain Jonathan Miller put the puck in net on Lancer goalie, Brendan Flaherty. This, however, would be the only time the horn would sound for West Orange’s fans. With the Livingston student section’s full support, the team was able to put on a show. Junior Josh Delsini scored twice in the first period with one assist from Cole Friedfertig and assisted Sophomore Jake Crockett later in the period.
In the second stanza, Ronan Tattersall and Crockett scored a goal each, and Friedertig added two more to the scoreboard, pushing the Mountaineers further out of the contest and keeping the Mountaineer mascot seated.
Finally, in the third period, David Reiter sealed the game with a goal assisted from Adam Jacobowitz. Senior Joe Lilien moved the puck well and left the game with an assist.
The Lancers made major improvements since their last game. Josh Delsini’s graceful puck handling and selflessness set up scoring plays, and Sophomore Phil Edelman hustled up and down the ice and recorded two shots that hit the pipe. Junior goalie Brendan Flaherty stopped the puck 16 times, proving that the Lancers will be in good hands next year when starter Brian Lilien graduates in June.
With Saturday’s game against West Essex postponed due to the impending storm, the Lancers look forward to Monday’s matchup against Montclair at Richard J. Codey Arena.
