LIVINGSTON, NJ - With 13 seconds remaining in the game, Mark Silvestri kicked the winning field goal for the Livingston Lancers from the 25-yard line to defeat the Nutley Raiders, 10-7, Saturday afternoon at Tangorra Field in Nutley.

“Clutch,” said Livingston head coach Barry Kostibos of Silvesteri’s kick. “He’s been clutch all year for us.”

“He’s amazing,” said Livingston quarterback of the Lancer kicker. “I’ve played with him since I was seven years old. He’ll do anything you ask him to do to help the team win.”

To set up the field goal the Lancers recovered a Raider’s fumble on the Livingston 49-yard line and Matt Gibbon marched the Lancers down to the field, throwing for 30 yards on the drive.

“We were trying to set up a field goal and [Gibbon] stepped up big time.”

Matt Gibbons praised his offensive line for allowing him the time and space to make passes on the final drive.

“It started with the [offensive] line. They gave me ten hours of time back there to pass the ball to the right guy.”

Livingston pulled ahead 7-0 early in the second quarter. Brandon Cohen received a pass from Gibbon and ran for 30 yards into the end zone.

Ryan McGlone tied the game for the Raider’s in the third quarter, receiving a pass from quarterback Anthony Condito and running for 76 yards.

Despite the one touchdown, throughout the entirety of the game, the Livingston defense stood tall, forcing the Raiders to punt the ball eight times.

Their most difficult task came late in the third quarter. Immediately following the Raiders game-tying touchdown, Livingston half-back Ryan Chessman fumbled the kickoff return on the Lancer 32 yard line.

With their team seemingly reeling, the Lancer defense came on the field and forced the Raiders into negative yards on the first three downs and to punt on fourth down.

“The defense was great, tremendous, absolutely outstanding,” said Kostibos.

Livingston missed on two opportunities to build on their 7 – 0 lead. Early in the third quarter Livingston fumbled the football, losing possession inside the Raiders five yard line. In the second quarter Silvestri missed a field goal attempt from the Raiders 19 yard line.

“You gotta capitalize. But right now were just working at winning games and doing whatever it takes to win games.”

With the win the Lancers improve their record to 3 -2. They continue their season, Friday Oct. 18, against Bloomfield at Livingston High school.
