Livingston “Gets Its Fresh On!” at The Village Farmers Market

LIVINGSTON, NJ - On Thursday, July 12, small businesses gathered in the parking lot of The Village at Livingston to sell their produce at the weekly farmer’s market. These vendors began to set up tents and tables at 11, an hour before the market was set to open. There were only about eight tents in total, but each tent sold different products.
Perhaps because it was an extremely hot afternoon, hardly any customers arrived around noon, when the produce was freshest. Nevertheless, the few customers who did come at noon clustered mainly around the front of the market, at the produce tent. This tent had crates filled with fresh flowers, red, yellow, and orange peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, potatoes, cabbages, lettuce, cauliflower, tomatoes, broccoli, and more.
Across from the produce was a bright yellow tent selling fresh squeezed lemonade, limeade, and strawberry drink.
Next to the produce tent was Dr. Pickle. This pickle stand sold various pickled items including mushrooms, chips, tomatoes, peppers, and olives. It also offered different types of sauerkraut. Each item was stored in its own barrel, located at the front of the tent.
Montclair Bread Company was located across from Dr. Pickle. Here, a woman was selling different types of bread and pastries. Some of the baskets held the more popular types of bread such as pumpernickel, sourdough, rye, and ciabatta. But, the business was also offering more unique loaves like apricot bread.
For the meat-loving customers there was Down To the Bone, a barbecue company. This tent sold pulled pork, pulled brisket, and ribs. The young woman working this tent had the meat cooking right in front of customers’ eyes at the market. In addition to meat, customers could also purchase coleslaw and baked beans, and cornbread came with any order.
In the far corner of the market was the World’s Best Crab cakes tent. Although crab cakes appeared to be their specialty, the tent also offered shrimp, regular crab, scallops, jumbo lobster and shrimp, and stuffed clams.
The Livingston farmers market is open every Thursday throughout the summer in the parking lot of the Village at Livingston from noon to 6.
