LIVINGSTON, NJ - The Lancers were beaten by the defending state champion Montclair Mounties, 49-7, Saturday afternoon at Woodman field in Montclair.

In the first half, the Lancers had difficulties both defensively and offensively, falling behind 42-0. They failed to convert on a single offensive possession, and failed to stop a single Montclair drive. The Mounties received rushing touchdowns from Rae Oliver (2), Tyler Riley (2), and passing touchdowns from Donovan McDonald, Kenny Rosario.

Lancer head coach Barry Kostibos felt his team played hard, but just did not stack up well against Montclair.

“We tried to compete, but it was hard. We were overmatched in a lot of spots.”

“When you’re offensive line can’t assert itself and when you’re defensive line can’t assert itself, there usually is not much else. [The Mounties] have speed, size and power. We don’t match up with that right now. “

In the second half, Livingston scored their only touchdown of the game and held Montclair to a single touchdown as well. By that point, both teams had already subbed out many of their starters for second string players. Kostibos, however, thought there were many positive signs in the way his team played.

“[In] the second half we continued to compete. Obviously it was against a lot of their second string players, but they still had good kids out there. We subbed and they subbed. It was a much better second half for us.”

The Lancers’ touchdown came early in the fourth quarter on a 52-yard drive. Aidan Kelly and Jared Burnbaum rushed the ball up the middle all the way to the Mounties 1-yard line. Quarterback Matt Gibbons carried the ball in for the touchdown.

Kostibos praised Kelly and Burnbaum’s play on the drive. “They did a good job. We shut down a lot of our first string players. They came in and did a good job. It was a good drive.”

The Lancers season continues, Thursday Oct. 12, against Nutley at Tangorra field.
