LIVINGSTON, NJ - The Livingston Lancers’ season began with a whimper, as they were beaten by Lincoln High School, 52-7, on Sunday afternoon.

“You gotta be prepared to play,” said Lancer head coach Barry Kostibos, following the loss. “We obviously weren’t able to play with [Lincoln] today. [Lincoln is] very good. [They’ve got] a lot of speed, a lot of size, and that gave us problems.”

Lincoln’s size, speed and preparation was evident throughout the entirety of the game, especially in the first half when they pulled ahead by 40-0, holding Livingston to only six first downs, and forcing the Lancers into three offensive turnovers.

Despite a lopsided and sloppy first game from Livingston, Kostibos remained positive that his team can play better.

“You’re never as good as you look in your best win," he said. "You’re never as bad as you look in your worst loss. So that’s how we’ll look at it, and we’ll go from there.”

The second half of the game perhaps showcased some of the better Lancer play that Kostibos spoke of. In the final two quarters, the Lancers were only outscored by five, including their only scoring play of the game.

The touchdown came early in the third quarter on an extended 75-yard drive. On third down at the Lincoln 10 yard line, quarterback Matt Gibbons found Will Cardona at the front right corner of the end zone.

Jake Rosenbaum and Aidan Kelly carried the ball up the middle, forcing their way through Lincoln’s front line for a combined 65 yards on the drive.

Kostibos said after an ugly loss his team will take away any positive they can and move forward.

“Now, we’re going to work toward our next game," Kostibos said. "We have to get our work in.”

The Lancers visit Millburn on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
