LIVINGSTON, NJ – The Livingston Lancers boys’ coccer team went up against the Union Farmers on Wednesday at home for Senior Night, which resulted in a 1-1 draw.

The game’s lone goals were highlighted in each half, with Union connecting in the first half, later followed by Livingston’s Robbie April netting the tying goal in the waning moments of the second half.

“Senior Night is always special and great for our guys,” Lancer head coach Roger Rubinetti said.

From the opening kickoff, Union was attacking the offensive end and generated many chances near the net but were only able to convert on one opportunity. On the other hand, Livingston began the game sluggishly and failed to win the time of possession battle. It wasn’t until the 31st minute when a Union Farmer settled one in the box after a rebound and buried it in the back of the net.

The efforts displayed by Livingston most of the second half showed their inability to score, as well. Yet, in the 75th minute, April poked the ball past the out-stretched arms of the Union goalkeeper, tying the game, 1-1.

In the overtime periods, both teams picked up the speed of the game and created more offensive chances. However, neither team was able to capitalize, culminating in a 1-1 draw.

Following the game, Lancer sophomore Cole Charney said, “We really need to work on increasing our scoring opportunities and keeping possession.”

Rubinetti added, “If we start out flat like this during the state tournament, then we may see an early exit. Moving forward, it’s going to be very important that we move guys around and have some fresh legs so that we don’t find ourselves in insurmountable holes.”

With the draw on Wednesday, the Union Farmers finish their season with a 6-11-2 record.

The Lancers (6-6-5) will finish regular-season play at home on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2:30 p.m. against West Essex. On Tuesday, Nov. 5, Livingston will begin the first round of the state tournament on the road at Bloomfield.
