LIVINGSTON, NJ - The Livingston Lancers varsity boys soccer team hosted the Tornadoes of Orange High School in the Essex County Soccer Tournament on Saturday night. In an exciting and hard-fought match on this windy fall night, the Lancers prevailed in a shootout.
“Possession-wise we did well. I thought we had our chances…we had opportunities, we just need someone to settle it down and finish our opportunities,” said head coach Roger Rubinetti.
The Lancers worked hard all night, but it was two big saves during penalty kicks by goalkeeper Garrett Meinhardt that really helped lock up the victory.
“We played hard the entire time – defense hung in there and we saved a couple and came away with the win so we’re happy,” said Meinhardt.
Ankush Rakhit, the Livingston team captain, scored on the first penalty kick attempt followed by a diving Meinhardt save which gave the Lancers confidence going into the second round of kicks up 1-0. Cole Charney then drove the ball in the back of the net and Meinhardt guessed right for a second consecutive time putting Livingston up 2-0. Then Billy Mandl and Ryan Chisarick finalized the win with two more scores, 4-1.
“It was a close game, the other team worked really hard and we kept up to them,” said Mandl. “It was close to the wire but we wound up having more chances and we had more momentum going to the penalty kicks.”
With this win, the Lancers advance in the Essex County Tournament and will host the winner of the Bloomfield/Newark East Side match which is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 16.
