NORTH CALDWELL, NJ - The Livingston boys’ soccer team defeated West Essex, 2-0, on Tuesday night.
The Lancers took control of the game early with goals from Zach Chaikin and Billy Mandl in the first 25 minutes of play.
Coming off losses to Seton Hall Prep and Montclair, Livingston head coach Roger Rubinetti was interested to see how his team would respond.
“It was important that we came out here tonight and capitalized on the opportunities that we were given,” Lancers head coach Roger Rubinetti said.
Both teams had a lot of opportunities throughout the game, but the first real chance came for Livingston in the eighth minute when Chaikin was able to find the net after a Livingston corner kick rattled around the box.
Not too much later, Mandl got in on the action with a shot on goal that Knights’ keeper Nicholas Cerrigone was able to corral for the save. Mandl eventually found the net in the 25th minute after a long pass got behind the West Essex defenders setting up a one-on-one advantage for Mandl, who capitalized on the opportunity.
“They [Livingston] were a little bit more fit and organized and they moved the ball pretty fast,” Knights head coach Rob Grasso said. “We had a hard time keeping up, and a lot of the time we were chasing the game so we weren’t able to get in on tackles and become dangerous.”
Grasso also said that the key adjustments the Knights need to make going forward are keeping up with the play, anticipating the play and creating opportunities when they can.
The Knights made a push in the second half but fatigue and frustration seemed to catch up with them in the end. Livingston was able to organize and play strong defense to finish the win. Garrett Meinhardt had five saves to earn the shutout for the Lancers.
Rubinetti described the win as a step in the right direction as the Lancers are a young team with only two starting seniors.
Both teams are back in action on Thursday. Livingston hosts West Orange, while West Essex has a tough matchup against Montclair. The games kick-off at 4 p.m.
