LIVESTRONG at Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA This Spring

Wednesday, February 5, 2014 • 12:11pm

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA invites adult cancer survivors from the community to participate in LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free 12-week researched-based program that meets twice per week and offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.

The goal of the program is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self-esteem. “Research shows exercise is the simplest way for cancer survivors to reduce fatigue, improve their mood and bounce back from the debilitating effects of cancer treatment more quickly,” said Andy Miller, LIVESTRONG Executive Vice-President.  In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, YMCA staff and members. . By focusing on the whole person, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer care bringing them back to their community in spirit, mind and body.

The YMCA is currently taking applications for survivors to join LIVESTRONG groups, which will take place in February in the mornings and evenings.  LIVESTRONG at the YMCA includes a family Y membership for cancer survivors. Please contact the YMCA at (908) 889-8880 or Livestrong@fspymca.org

The Livestrong Foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of people affected by cancer now. Livestrong at the YMCA is one of 16 initiatives that have grown from a collaboration of the Livestrong Foundation and Y USA.  This program at the Y is currently self-sustaining with the community’s support. 100% of the funds raised are used directly to service cancer survivors in the community. The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA is one of 115 Y’s in the country that since the programs beginning in 2008 has worked with 13,000 cancer survivors.

The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
