Literacy Volunteers Will Train New Tutors
In Sussex County it is possible for adults to get significant help in their use of English---and to get it free. Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County (LVSC) provides such help to adults, born here or abroad, who need to improve their writing, reading, talking or understanding English. This is done on a confidential basis by trained tutors, who work one-on-one with the students, concentrating on the student’s present goals. The result: someone gets a driver’s license, or a job, or a promotion—or just finds it easier to operate in the community.
LVSC has about 80 active tutors, but needs more. It is therefore offering training for new volunteers. It introduces that training with an orientation session, designed to provide a feel for the process of tutoring, both the effort and the rewards---and thus to permit someone to decide whether they want to become a tutor. This orientation is followed by six weekly training sessions.
The orientation will be offered at 6:30 PM, Tuesday, September 11, at Homer’s Restaurant (18 Sparta Avenue, Sparta). The training sessions, also at 6:30 at Homer’s Restaurant, will be on Tuesdays, September 18 through October 23. Anyone who is interested can learn more or sign up by calling the LVSC office, 973-300-9444, or by visiting the web site www.literacyforyou.org.
