Library of the Chathams Faces Technical Support Issues

CHATHAM, NJ - The good news is that the Library of the Chathams is attracting lots of visitors. Enough to fill Yankee Stadium more than five times, according to Library Director Karen Brodsky.

Despite the many positives included in the 2013 library report, Brodsky came before the Chatham Township Committee and, more recently, the Borough of Chatham Council on Monday to reveal a decline in services from MAIN, the Morris Automated Information Network. The major concern is that MAIN is no longer offering quality technical support.

"The Library of the Chathams was not able to receive the same level of (technical) support and it was a lot slower," Brodsky said.

The Library of the Chathams also hired its own IT support personnel, but has been unable to keep up with the demand of servicing 64 computers. Brodsky noted that some libraries in the area have dealt with the diminished service from MAIN by allowing the computers to remain down for a period of time.

Council members agreed that they should reach out to Freeholder Hank Lyon, who attended a borough council meeting in April and took notes on the council's concerns. 

"We should probably have a better dialogue with the Freeholders than we do," Council member James Collander said. 

The council agree that it should seek answers from the Morris County Freeholders before deciding how to remedy the situation.

Among the statistics revealed in the 2013 report: 

  • 262,437 visitors
  • 168,780 virtual web visits to the library site
  • 235,634 items checked out
  • 17,319 reference questions answered
  • 6,450 books added
  • 795 additional movies
  • 113 new music CDs
  • 117 audiobooks
  • 4,834 e-Books
  • 539 children's programs (2,456 attended)
  • 220 adult programs (3,250 attended)
