WESTFIELD, NJ — Update: TAP has learned that three residents--a woman and her two children--were at home when a fire broke out at their house on the 100 block of Liberty Avenue the evening of March 1. The fire was extinguished that night. No one was injured and the cause of the fire was still under investigation, according to Battalion Chief James Ryan of the Westfield Fire Department, who spoke to TAP at the scene.
“The house sustained a lot of heat and fire damage,” said Ryan. The house is currently unlivable. The Red Cross is assisting the home’s residents with emergency shelter for three days.
The Westfield Fire Department received assistance from Cranford, Rahway and Roselle Fire Departments on the scene. Scotch Plains, Garwood and Fanwood Fire Departments covered for Westfield at headquarters while the firefighters were out.
