WEST ORANGE, NJ - As my high school junior and I stopped at a Lacrosse store in Montclair this afternoon to get his LAX stick re-strung, we were surprised to see several families purchasing gear and equipment for their boys that were clearly under the age of 10. It underscored the reality that towns like Montclair have long-standing Lacrosse programs that are available to kids at a very young age, and their highly successful high school team is the result of the feeder programs offered in that town.

The West Orange Recreation Department and Lacrosse Program at West Orange High School are taking the lead to provide similar youth Lacrosse programs in West Orange.  Lacrosse is relatively new in the township, and as the high school works to strengthen its program, so too the Rec Department has set up programs for West Orange youth.

The West Orange Recreation Department is organizing Spring Lacrosse Programs for residents in grades K through 8. According to the Rec website:

The "Little Lax" clinic is open to West Orange residents in grades K through 2.  The clinic is held on Sundays at Suriano Stadium from Noon to 1:00 pm.  All equipment is provided and the registration fee is $50.00.  The first session will be held on April 13th and the last session is June 1st.  The head clinician will be Mike Velez, WOHS Head Lacrosse coach.  This clinic is a perfect introduction to the sport.

For residents in grades 3 through 8, the Recreation Department will be sponsoring travel teams.  There will be 3 teams, one for grades 3/4, one for grades 5/6 and a team for grades 7/8.  Practices and home games are held at Suriano Stadium.  The season will run from mid-April through early June.  This is full equipment lacrosse and all equipment will be provided EXCEPT for a mouthpiece and stick.  The registration fee is $100, which includes a mandatory $25.00 membership fee to US Lacrosse.

For more information or to register for any of these programs, please download the registration form.

Recreation Director Bill Kehoe contacted the Alternative Press to advise residents that the programs are filling up rapidly, and at some point they will have to turn away interested participants.
