FANWOOD, NJ -- La Grande Park summer camp is an opportunity for kids to have fun during school the break. With helpful, engaged staff members, the kids are in a safe and friendly environment all summer long. The children especially enjoy the playground and sports activities.

After Bob Budiansky, the head of Fanwood Recreation, and Lisa Capanna, the camp's director, restructured the camp many years ago, families have shown a lot of interest in participating. Currently, the camp has expanded to 65-75 children divided into three groups from kindergarten through sixth grade. For eight weeks from 9 a.m. to noon -- or now even to 3 p.m. -- parents can drop off their kids for a few hours of activity, education and fun.

Every year the camp makes improvements to keep the children entertained. Two years ago they added a pavilion to the park for more space to craft and play.

"Every week we have a new theme and we try to make one craft a day according to that theme. On Fridays we offer special entertainment. This week we had a circus theme, so we have a magician coming.  Mondays and Tuesdays the Fanwood Library offers books based on the weekly theme that are not only read out to the children during camp but that they can also take home and read. We do have one water day a week as well," said Capanna.

LaGrande Camp has also a lot of sports equipment, board games and crafting to offer, such as tie dye and friendship bracelets.

High school or college-age counselors and older, more experienced counselors work hand-in-hand to create a team with a relaxed and organized atmosphere.

"We will have a summer program for teenagers between seventh and ninth grade called Tweens & Teens Travel Camp as well where we have a trip every day. For example to the movies, the Funplex, laser tag, Great Adventure and Hurricane Harbor," Capanna said. Registration is online at www.fanwoodrecreation.org.
