LIVINGSTON, NJ – The Livingston varsity girls basketball team used a strong third quarter surge to roll to a 37-16 victory over the Cedar Grove Panthers on Wednesday at Livingston High School.

The game was strikingly similar to the team’s previous matchup with the Panthers in which the Lady Lancers also broke open a close game after halftime that was spearheaded by relentless full-court pressure.

Both teams struggled during the opening half offensively, due to solid man-to-man defense. Cedar Grove handled Livingston’s full court pressure better than they did in the previous game, but still had trouble converting baskets in the half court.

Sarosha Parsons and Sam Rothenberger lead the Lancers as key contributors on both ends of the floor. The Lady Lancers went to the locker room holding a 18-13 lead.

After the break, the Lancers’ full court press began to pay dividends as it lead to easy baskets in transition. Aided by the defensive efforts of tri-captains Katie Horiuchi, Catherine Callaghan, and Nicole LaRusso—Rothenberger and Parsons lead the charge.

The Lancers outscored the Panthers, 11-2, in the third quarter building a 14- point cushion as they headed into the final stanza.

During the fourth quarter, Coach Buddy Wolfe, who filled in for Coach Patty Kaes, gave his reserves some quality minutes. They did not disappoint—especially on the defensive end. They held Cedar Grove to a single point in the fourth quarter.

Scoring leader Parsons finished with 14 points, while Rothenberger had 10. The Lancers’ next play Newark Central in another SEC conference matchup Friday at LHS at 5:30 p.m.
