LIVINGSTON, NJ - The Livingston High School girls basketball team played a strong game, from the opening tip-off—rolling past neighboring Verona High School, 61-47, on Monday in Verona. The Lady Lancers rebounded from Saturday’s heartbreaking overtime loss at Nutley as the girls looked sharp throughout. The star of the game for Livingston was senior Sam Rothenberger who dominated the boards and also had a season high 20 points in leading the Lancers to victory.
Early in the first quarter, it became apparent that the Hillbillies were struggling with the Livingston’s length and athleticism—with their man-to-man pressure defense. Sophomore Sarosha Parsons and senior Catherine Callaghan were especially disruptive on the defensive end. Also in the first half, the backcourt of senior Katie Horiuchi and junior Nicole LaRusso continued their hot shooting of late. The Lancers were able to build a sizable 31-13 lead at the intermission.
Despite some solid shooting from Verona’s Julie Rosenberg, Sarah O’Neil, and Remy Sullivan, the Lancers maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half. Lead by Rothenberger’s inside dominance, Livingston was able to thwart any effort by the Hillbillies to get back in the game. Parsons added 11 points, while Horiuchi and Callaghan both netted 10 for the Lady Lancers.
The girls’ final scheduled home game of the season is Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. versus the Golden Eagles of Morris Knolls. The five seniors on the team—Catherine Callaghan, Katie Horiuchi, Sam Leshinsky, Sam Rothenberger and Gianna Vaccaro will be honored in a presentation before the game starts. The tripleheader begins with a freshman game at 4 p.m. followed by a Junior Varsity game at 5:30 p.m.
