Lady Cougars Fall to Morris Catholic Monday Night, Share Division Title
Tuesday, February 21, 2012 • 7:44am
DENVILLE, NJ - It was a tough situation for the Chatham girls basketball team on Monday night.
It was only three nights before that the Lady Cougars had battled toe-to-toe and defeated rival Morris Catholic for five quarters, 44-40 in overtime, in the Morris County Tournament semi-finals.
And now they had to travel to Morris Catholic's home and take on the Lady Crusaders in what would determine if Chatham would have to share a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference Independence Division title.
Monday's game was originally scheduled for last week, but both schools moved the game after the county tournament game.
Going onto the Lady Crusaders floor though was tough and Chatham would drop the 49-44 decision and share the NJAC Independence title. It was only the second loss in 24 games for the Lady Cougars this season, 22-2.
"You have to give them (Morris Catholic) credit," said Chatham head coach Joe Gaba, whose team defeated Morris Catholic two out of the three contests including a win in January in Chatham. "We knew they would come out with a chip on their shoulder. They played a very good game."
The Cougars head coach said that it was a tough scenario with the county game on Friday and the game on Monday night. "Definitely," said Gaba about how it is difficult to play the same team twice in four days. "I thought we came out relaxed."
Despite the loss it was the third straight year that the Lady Cougars either shared or won outright the divisional title. In 2009-10 and 2010-11 Chatham won the division titles outright. "To win it three years in a row is a credit to the hard work and effort put in by the girls," said Gaba. "This is the toughest division in the NJAC."
While there have been some good battles between the two schools, Chatham will be moving to the NJAC National division next school year that includes Delbarton, Randolph and Roxbury.
In the second half Chatham would cut the Morris Catholic lead to four, but each time the Lady Crusaders would fire back.
"It's difficult because you expend so much energy coming back and it is hard to sustain that," said Gaba.
In the Morris County Tournament win over Morris Catholic, the Lady Cougars were able to contain Crusaders Alexa Giuliano and Sade Idera to three points each.
But on Monday night the two Morris Catholic players combined for 21 points on their home floor.
Senior guard Amanda Berntsen led Chatham again, this time with 20 points while Kendall Davies and Samantha Kennedy dropped in nine and six points respectively in the league game on Monday night.
Gaba said that they were being hurt on the glass where Morris Catholic was getting extra shots up and that's where Giuliano and Idera were getting many of their points.
"We were getting killed on the boards especially in the first half," said Gaba.
As it turned out without any of the Chatham fans knowing, the Lady Cougars final lead came two minutes into the second quarter when Grace Conroy hit a pair of free throws to give Chatham a 14-13 lead.
Morris Catholic's Anna Toke would hit a bucket a minute later to put Chatham down 15-14 and Chatham would never get back on top.
After going down by seven at halftime, 23-16, Chatham would make a couple of runs in the second half only to have Giuliano hit a bucket that would end the Lady Cougars momentum.
Davies would hit the third of his three, three pointers with five minutes left in the game to slice the Morris Catholic lead to three, 37-34.
But it was the Crusaders night as Morris Catholic would go on an 8-0 run as the Cougars deficit rose to 11, 45-34 with less than four minutes left in the game.
Behind Berntsen Chatham would make a late run in less than two minutes, but it was just too big of a deficit to make up.
After taking on Mountain Lakes on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. as part of a boys-girls doubleheader at home, the Lady Cougars will take on Jefferson in the MCT final on Friday night at FDU-Florham Park.
