Komen North Jersey Pink Tie Ball® At Livingston's Crystal Plaza
Thursday, October 17, 2013 • 1:51pm
LIVINGSTON, NJ – Susan G. Komen North Jersey will be bringing back their signature event—their renowned Pink Tie Ball® gala—on Friday, November 1, 2013 at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston, NJ. In celebration of the return of New Jersey’s premier annual fundraising event in the battle against breast cancer, Dr. Judith A. Salerno, the new President and Chief Executive Officer of the Susan G. Komen national organization, will be attending as the Affiliate’s special guest. The event, entitled An Evening in Pink: Journeys of Courage, will also feature appearances by Pat Battle, Co-Anchor of NBC4’s “Weekend Today in New York,” and WABC-TV “Eyewitness News Team” Reporter Anthony Johnson, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
As the recently-appointed President and CEO of Susan G. Komen, Dr. Salerno is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the national organization, and for setting Komen’s strategic vision. Before joining Komen, Dr. Salerno was Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer (the Leonard D. Schaeffer Executive Officer) of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. A board-certified physician in internal medicine, Dr. Salerno holds an M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School and a Master of Science degree in Health Policy from the Harvard School of Public Health. She is widely regarded for her expertise in medical research, healthcare policy, and for developing and implementing innovative public health programs. A native of New Jersey, Dr. Salerno grew up in Newark and graduated from East Orange Catholic High School.
Jennifer Griola, Executive Director of Komen North Jersey, says that the Affiliate is very excited about finally being able to bring back the Pink Tie Ball®—last year’s “return” of the Pink Tie Ball®, scheduled for November 2, 2012, was cancelled because of Superstorm Sandy—and feels it’s a tremendous honor that Dr. Salerno will be there to help celebrate. “Choosing the first weekend in November for our event is symbolic of Komen North Jersey’s core mission,” says Griola. “Breast cancer awareness, and working to end breast cancer forever, is not something we do only in October; it’s a 365-days-a-year commitment for us. Scheduling our fundraiser right on the heels of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is intended to let people know that we need their support all year round, so that we can keep spreading the word, and keep saving lives right here in northern New Jersey.”
Although they have already sent word that they will be unable to attend this year’s gala, Governor and Mrs. Chris Christie have expressed their proud support of Komen North Jersey and the work they do to help medically-underserved women and men in our home state gain access to the screening, treatment support, breast health education, and other breast care services they need. Governor Christie’s mother, the late Sondra Christie, died of breast cancer in 2004, and the Governor and First Lady have been longtime supporters of the Affiliate.
No event would be complete without recognizing those who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the cause. This year’s An Evening in Pink honorees are: Robin Bloink Ventura, Esq. and Michael Ventura, Esq. (Courage for the Cure); The Conti Group (Support for the Cure); and The Breast Centers of Atlantic Health–Breast Center at Overlook Medical Center and Rippel Breast Center at Morristown Medical Center (Hope for the Cure). “They are an inspiration to us all,” says Griola.” They have distinguished themselves through the exceptional contributions they’ve made, of both time and support, to the fight against breast cancer.”
Komen North Jersey will also be honoring the forty-one breast cancer survivors who have been immortalized in the Affiliate’s Journeys of Courage Photo Essay, a collection of beautiful portraits by renowned New Jersey photographer Berit Bizjak; Griola says that new portraits of “five incredible women and men” are to be unveiled that evening. “Every breast cancer diagnosis is the start of a journey that requires incredible inner strength and courage,” says Griola. “For many survivors, this personal battle inspires a compelling need to give back, to do something, to make a difference. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize and thank all our Journeys for sharing their profound messages of hope in order to heighten awareness of the disease that so deeply touched their lives.”
THE FUN, THE JOY, THE GIVING
But without a doubt, beyond the fabulous décor by Jerry Rose Floral + Event Design, dancing to the great show band sounds of The Infernos, the cocktails, and the dinner, the real joy, the real essence of An Evening in Pink is about giving generously. More than 100 silent auction packages will be on display ranging from home décor to baubles and bangles, from sports to fashion’s finest. There will also be a raffle or two. ABOUT SUSAN G. KOMEN NORTH JERSEY
Through our annual Susan G. Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure and other local events and activities, Komen North Jersey raises funds that support local community non-profits that provide screening, breast health/breast cancer education, treatment support, and survivorship programs for medically-underserved men and women in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. Since its founding in 1997, Komen North Jersey has awarded over $15.4 million in local community grants, and has directed $6.7 million to the Susan G. Komen Grants Program for breast cancer research. Of the net funds the Affiliate raises, 75% supports life-saving programs right here in the nine New Jersey counties it serves; the remaining 25% is directed to national research programs in pursuit of new breast cancer screening techniques, better and more effective treatment options, and the ultimate realization of our vision—a world without breast cancer. In 2012, $1.5 million of these national research dollars was invested here in New Jersey—at Rutgers and Princeton Universities—who are engaged in groundbreaking breast cancer research primarily focused on metastatic breast cancer.
