LIVINGSTON, NJ – According to the International Dairy Foods Association, July has been National Ice Cream month since 1984.

On their website, the organization states that, “In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90 percent of the nation’s population.”

Ice Cream Businesses in Livingston offer patrons a variety of ice cream flavors throughout the year, including during National Ice Cream Month.

Craig Fischbein, owner of The Boston Ice Cream Company at 47 East Northfield Road, says chocolate addiction, which consists of chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips and fudge is amongst the most popular flavors at his store, which offers 22 ice cream flavors at a time, in addition to frozen yogurt, candy, cakes, and other sweet treats.

The chocolate bomb, which is chocolate ice cream, caramel, oreos, and chocolate covered pretzels, as well as the cookie monster, which consists of vanilla ice cream with oreos and cookie dough, are also amongst his store’s most popular ice cream flavors.

“We sell out of a ton of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and coffee” Fischbein remarked.

He also noted that items containing peanut butter and oreos were popular.

“Everyone around the world seems to like it (ice cream). Every country around the world has some variation of ice cream; ice cream, gelato, ice, whatever” Fischbein said.

He added that people should “Eat as much of it (ice cream) as you can” for National Ice Cream Month.

Frozen in Time Ice Cream Parlour at 129 South Livingston Avenue has been offering patrons 40 different Hershey’s ice cream flavors, in addition to frozen yogurt, for two years.

The manager of the store, Jesse, noted that the most popular ice cream flavors for kids included the store’s superman flavor, cotton candy, and playdough.

Popular flavors for adults include moose tracks, which consists of chocolate or vanilla ice cream with chocolate peanut butter cups, or soft serve frozen yogurt.

In addition to offering ice cream and frozen yogurt, Frozen In Time offers it’s customers in-store promotions, as well as Italian ice, cakes, smoothies, juice, and coffee.

“Go to your favorite ice cream store, and support them, and go enjoy (ice cream) with you and your family” Jesse said of National Ice Cream Month.

As an alternative to ice cream, Livingston also has frozen yogurt eateries.

YoFresh Yogurt Café at 1 West Pleasant Avenue offers patrons self-serve frozen yogurt.

Jason Martinez, a manager at YoFresh Yogurt, believes frozen yogurt is a healthy alternative to ice cream.  Martinez stated that frozen yogurt “Helps you digest your food, if you combine it with fruits or nuts, it’s a good balance” he stated.

Martinez noted that sea salt caramel, which has pieces of pretzel in it, is the most popular yogurt flavor at the store.

Patrons at YoFresh can choose between 16 different frozen yogurt flavors, plus sorbet and a variety of toppings, which include a variety of candy, fruits, nuts and more.

According to Linda Utterback, Executive Director of the National Ice Cream Association, there are approximately 15,000 ice cream stores across America. Roughly a third of these are chain stores, while the other two-thirds are independently owned.

Utterback also stated that vanilla is the most popular ice cream flavor in the United States.

She also said that people should “eat lots of ice cream” for National Ice Cream Month.
