NEWTON, N.J. – The first Sussex County social event of the year will take place without fail at the Sussex County Fairgrounds on Saturday, January 26 when 150 golfers show up for the annual United Way Chili Open Golf Classic. In its 10th year, this United Way of Northern New Jersey fundraiser in partnership with the Sussex County Rotary Clubs combines a spirit of fun with the serious work of raising money to support Sussex County families struggling to make ends meet.
With the opportunity to golf 18 holes – sometimes in the snow – and take part in a chili sampling fest, the Chili Open is a family-friendly event. Golfers can also take part in raffles featuring prizes from local businesses and community members.
“The best of Sussex County is on display at this event year after year,” said Mary Emilius, United Way’s chief professional officer in Sussex County. “You see the tightknit community spirit as well as our ability to not take ourselves too seriously by playing golf sometimes knee-deep in snow.”
United Way research shows that 1 in 4 Sussex County households is at risk of falling into poverty with just one emergency. These households struggle to afford the basics of housing, food, transportation, child care and health care due to the region’s high cost of living. United Way is working with community leaders to develop long-term solutions to help these households become self-sufficient.
United Way is joined by this year’s Chili Open supporters Ames Rubber, Century Link, Clear Channel Communities, Eastern Propane, Lakeland Bank, New Jersey Herald, New Jersey State Fair, PSE&G, Selective Insurance and Sussex Bank.
Tickets are $75 per golfer. For more information or to register, visit www.UnitedWayNNJ.org/Chili2013
