PATERSON, NJ - The John F. Kennedy High School varsity football team will be on the road to take on Old Tappan at 6 p.m. Friday night in Bergen County.
Although Old Tappan comes into the game with a formidable 6-1 record, the Knights of JFK are coming off a hard-fought effort against an opponent with an even better record. Last week, Kennedy lost, 14-6, to undefeated Passaic Tech.
Despite the defeat, JFK head coach Ron Jackson's team has won three of its last five games (they're 3-4 overall).
Against Passaic Tech, the Knights' defense allowed just one touchdown, a 2-yard run in the first quarter. Their defense held tight the rest of the way, with Passaic Tech's other TD coming on a special teams miscue on a blocked punt recovery.
"Our defense was led by a dominating performance by returning first-team all-county Quashon Johnson at defensive end," Jackson told The Alternative Press of Paterson. "(We had) great inside run-stuffing play by inside linebackers Zaire McGuire and Walid Rabbah, excellent outside contain by our outside 'backers John Burton and Jamier Taylor.
"Additionally our DBs, Tyquese Jackson and second-team all-county from a year ago, Shaon Stephenson, did a great job of staying disciplined by not allowing their wide receivers to get behind our defense."
The Knights scored their touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 23-yard pass from Tyquese Jackson to Xavier Harris, offering hope for an offensive unit that is young and still seeking consistency.
"Our offense starts five sophomores, including sophomore Cornelius Kinchen," Jackson said. "So we are still a work in progress on the offensive side of the ball. Our team starts six sophomores and one freshman, which provides us with a great nucleus for the next two years."
