Jazz Legend Billy Drummond to Perform in Summit Sep. 29

The Billy Drummond Quartet will perform at Christ Church in Summit on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. Leader Billy Drummond is heralded as “one of the most crisp, popping and sensitive drummers around [Modern Drummer] and featuring -- Tom Harrell a world-renowned American post-bop jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer and arranger and ">Mulgrew Miller (piano) a living legend with performances at prestigious venues around the world, including the Kennedy Center.

Critically acclaimed drummer, educator and bandleader Billy Drummond took up drums at age four and was playing in local bands from age eight, before going on to study at Shenandoah Conservatory in his teens. In 1986 he was encouraged by Al Foster to move to New York, where he almost immediately joined the young band, "Out of the Blue" (OTB), with whom he recorded for Blue Note Records, before being invited to join piano master Horace Silver's Sextet, and, later, J.J. Johnson and Sonny Rollins. Now one of “the most called for players of his generation” [Downbeat],
Drummond has performed and recorded with the world’s greatest jazz artists, including Joe Henderson, Nat Adderley, Bobby Hutcherson, Chris Potter, Joe Lovano, Buster Williams, Eddie Gomez, Freddie Hubbard, Walt Weiskopf, Hank Jones, Joe Locke, Eddie Henderson, Larry Willis, and Archie Shepp, among many others, and is part of the Grammy-nominated Carla Bley Big Band, and a long-term member of Carla Bley and the Lost Chords, as well as the Steve Kuhn Trio. He has recorded well over 250 CDs in all genres of jazz, Drummond has made six critically acclaimed CDs as a co-leader and three as a leader, including Dubai, which was voted Number 1 on the Top Ten Best of 1996 by the New York Times. Drummond currently leads the New York-based band Freedom of Ideas and is also Professor of Jazz Drums at the Juilliard School of Music and NYU’s Steinhardt School.
