MEDIA ALERT

Iris House Co-hosts Second Annual Plainfield, NJ Community Health and Wellness Fair to Raise Awareness of HIV/AIDS and Other Health Services in the Area

- Iris House Marks Three Years of Providing Services to At-risk Communities in New Jersey -

New York, NY,July 30, 2013– On Saturday, August 10, 2013, Iris House, the country’s first community-based organization to meet the needs of women, families and at-risk communities infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS, today announced it is co-hosting the second annual Plainfied Leading Ladies Community Health & Wellness Fair.  The Fair brings together local community organizations to offer Plainfield residents disease prevention education, supportive services and free screening/testing services for a number of healthcare issues critical to the community, including HIV,  glucose, cholesterol, hypertension and breast cancer .  The fair will take place on August 10, 2013, from 11am to 3pm at the YWCA located at 232 East Front Street.

Participating organizations include Icla Da Silva Foundation, Hopes Action, Hyacinth AIDS Foundation, JFK Medical Center, Community Blood Services, New Hope for Recovery, NJ Family Care, Quest Diagnostics, NJ Sharing Network, Plainfield Fire Department, Plainfield Police Department,   Planned Parenthood of Central and Greater Northern NJ and PROCEED, Inc.  Live entertainment also will be provided with performances by local artists, dance troupes and a DJ.  In addition to Iris House, the community health and wellness fair is co-sponsored by US Health and Human Services Office on Women's Health, NJ DHSTS-Division of HIV/STD & TB Services, Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Drug Mart Pharmacy, Rapps Pharmacy, Sleepy Hollow Restaurant and Front Street Pharmacy.

Plainfield has been greatly affected by HIV/AIDS. In 2012, 522 residents (1.0% of the population) were living with HIV, a rate over 400% the national rate.  Of these residents, 34% (almost 2 in 5) were women, well above the national average of 1 in 4.

Adrian O. Mapp, 3rd Ward Councilman and Democratic Mayoral Nominee said, “We are excited to build on the success of last year’s fair. We again have a fantastic group of organizations coming together to provide resources and information to address the critical healthcare needs in our community. Plainfield continues to appreciate the support of our sponsors who make this fair possible.”

“I am very excited to become a part of the Second Annual Plainfield, NJ Community Health and Wellness Fair,” Jerry Green, Democratic Committee Chairman said. “These issues are of vital importance to all Plainfield residents. I am proud to support the tireless efforts of Iris House in caring for our at-risk community members and look forward to continuing the work within our community that helps provide the care that so many people need.”

Iris House has four locations, including two offices in Manhattan and one in the Bronx, New York.  The newest location in Mt. Zion A.M.E. (630 East Front St. (Suite 100)) provides HIV/AIDS prevention and education services to local residents.  In addition, Iris House currently has engaged eleven  Plainfield businesses to participate in its condom distribution program.  Services in Plainfield have been made possible partly through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Health.

“Iris House has become a strong presence for at-risk groups in the City of Plainfield and surrounding communities.  We are extremely pleased once again to partner with them in this year's health fair to bring health and well-ness issues to the community,” commented Reverend W. Golden Carmon, Pastor of Mount Zion A.M.E. “We are acutely aware the rate of HIV infection is far higher in Plainfield than in the nation at large.  Community services and prevention education, offered in close association with Iris House, have become a vital part of our effort to fulfill Christ's Great Commission; this is our reasonable service.  Partnering with Iris House in an annual health and wellness fair allows us to expand beyond this mandate to address other key health issues.”

Ingrid Floyd, Executive Director of Iris House, said, "We are very excited to mark our third year of services for families in Plainfield, which we have offered through local schools and churches and now through our permanent facility at Mt. Zion A.M.E.  Since we first came to New Jersey, Iris House has worked with more than 1,000 individuals in the state, taught in 6 schools and churches, given away more than 136,000 condoms each year, and conducted more than 270 screenings and HIV Rapid Tests each year.”
