Ira Geiger, Candidate's Opinion

Ira Geiger, Republican Candidate for Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders

Wednesday, September 25, 2013 • 4:40am

As a candidate for the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I’m in favor of cutting taxes, controlling spending, and spreading the tax revenue around fairly to all 21 towns in Union County.  Each municipality should have equal representation in the distribution of tax revenue.  The surrounding suburbs should be independent, not satellites of Union County’s largest city.

We recognize Elizabeth’s problems, its higher population density and income disparity.  But the solution is to make Elizabeth economically stronger so that her suburbs don’t do what suburbs have historically done in the shadow of massive cities with massive budgets – flee.  Elizabeth needs the support of her neighboring municipalities.  However, they will be unable to assist if they are economically enervated in the attempt.

The Board of Chosen Freeholders has a duty to establish an alliance between Elizabeth and the other municipalities.  This alliance should enhance Elizabeth’s standing as a major New Jersey city while preserving the independence and financial stability of the other 20 towns.

As majority candidates sometimes need to listen to minority candidates, so big cities sometimes need to listen to the concerns of their smaller neighbors.  Without the legs on this table, the table couldn’t stand.  Without the table, the legs would be useless.  Union County’s county seat and the other municipalities, though they may be different components of the county, need to stand together.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Special Education. Teaching special education students is something I've wanted to do all my life. Educating a student that is far behind, with so many challenges takes patience, perseverance, and planning.

Union County has a diverse population with equally challenging needs requiring a sense of balance, fairness, and diplomacy. My education, credentials, and experience uniquely prepared me for the task of communicating and interacting with various communities on a personal, yet professional level.

I believe I can help bring everyone in Union County to the table in a fair-minded, responsible manner to make the county successful in meeting its residents' needs.
