EDISON, NJ – Just across the border from South Plainfield, on Oak Tree Road in Edison, the India Day parade kicked off on Sunday to huge crowds.

The parade honors India’s 67th Independence Day and draws people from all over the area, including South Plainfield.  Several public officials and political candidates from South Plainfield participated in the event, which starts in Edison and ends in the Iselin section of Woodbridge.  The 1.9 mile parade goes through the “Little India” section of the two towns and included a host of floats, community organization, dancers, and bands.

Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadago, who is seeking reelection this year, walked the parade route shaking hands, as did candidate for Governor Barbara Buono.

“This is my favorite event of the year,” said Raisha Patel, who brought her two sons to the parade.  “I come every year.”

The parade is in its ninth year and is sponsored by the Indian Business Association, Inc.  The group was founded in 1991 and serves the small business community on Oak Tree Road and in the surrounding areas.
