Nancy Thorne of Toms River was identified as the person killed in an accident this weekend in Toms River. Thorne was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, Ronald Thorne. The two-vehicle crash happened Sunday evening at the intersection of Route 70 and Massachusetts Avenue in Toms River. Thorne was transported to Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood where she was pronounced dead. Her husband was transported by helicopter to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune to treat his injuries.
Thorne was a life-long chorus teacher in the South Plainfield School system and was beloved by so many in South Plainfield.
“Nancy Thorne inspired so many of the students she taught at South Plainfield Middle School,” remarked former student Shayne Austin Miller who now serves on the senior management team at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn.
“Mrs. Thorne cared about each student, whether they were interested in music or not and was a true educator," said Miller. "She prepared students in middle school for the challenges they would face in high school and inspired us with an amazing passion for singing and an unbeatable work ethic. I know many students continued their life-long relationship with music and singing because of the love Mrs. Thorne had for her students and her music. We lost a true arts educator and condolences to her family on behalf of all of the lives Mrs. Thorne touched.”
Thorne moved to the Lakewood area ten years ago and was involved in both the German choirs in Lakewood and the choir in Holiday City. The accident is still under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
