GREEN BROOK, NJ -- Matthew Rifino, a native of Green Brook and 1999 graduate of Immaculata High School, won the Engineer of the Year award at the third annual SAE Institute New York Alumni Awards, which were held at The Cutting Room in Manhattan in early July.

“Our Alumni Awards celebrated the noteworthy contributions that SAE alumni have made in the entertainment and audio industries over the past year,” says SAE New York Campus Director Michael Morrell.  “Matthew’s win and impressive career are testaments to the outstanding quality of SAE’s curriculum and training, as well as his own hard work, dedication to excellence, and immense talent.”

Rifino is a 2000 graduate of the Audio Technology Program of SAE Institute, which is a creative media arts college in New York City.  His career path has included engineering jobs at Avatar Studios (NYC), Granite Alps Studios (Wayne, NJ), and Fenix Studios (Staten Island, NY), and he’s currently a music mixer on NBC’s “The Today Show”.  His numerous industry awards include the 2011 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Live and Direct to Tape Mixing, the 2012 Sports Emmy for Outstanding Technical Achievement, and the 2012 SAE Alumni Award for Outstanding Live Engineer.

As far as advice is concerned to those who’d like to become professional audio engineers, Smiley recommends that they should be prepared to work very hard.

“Aspiring audio pros should be ready to sacrifice holidays, parties, birthdays, and vacations in order to advance in their careers,” says Smiley.  “If you commit yourself 100% to your craft, with dedication and commitment you can be a successful producer, mixer, or engineer.”
