Hurricane Sandy Bears Down on Millburn, New Jersey; Downed Trees and Widespread Power Outages Reported

MILLBURN, NJ - With winds and rain intensifying, Millburn officials are dealing with downed trees and power lines and providing assistance for residents who might lose their power.

Mayor Sandra Haimoff and Township Administrator Timothy Gordon held a press conference at 3 p.m. in which they outlined measures the township is taking, according to Assistant Township Administrator Alex McDonald.

“We’re at the beginning of the storm,” he said late this afternnon. “We’re ready, we’re set up.”

Public Works personnel are out in force and are ready to respond to emergencies and some administrators and Town Hall staff will be on hand through the evening to assist.

South Mountain School and Town Hall will be open during the day as warming and power stations. Residents will be able to recharge their electronic devices at those sites.

Officials are also reminding residents that Essex County has opened Richard J. Codey Arena at South Mountain as a shelter.

A call center has been opened for residents to report any storm-related information or flooding issues. The number is 973-564-7755 and will be staffed 24 hours.

Residents are reminded that for true emergencies, they should call 9-1-1.

The police department is reporting a number of road closures. Where wires are down, workers are doing their best to cut off electricity and alert JCP&L. McDonald said at this point, officials are evaluating if it is safe to do work in the area.

As of 5 p.m., the following streets had downed trees: Bailey Road, Berkeley Road, Rahway Road, Sagamore Road and Mountain Avenue, Ferncliff Terrace, Route 124, Troy Drive, Delwick Lane, Minnisink Road and Hartshorn Drive, and Ridgewood Road.

Downed wires were reported on Pine Terrace East, Great Oak Terrace, Mr. Ararat Road, Undercliff Road, Clinton Avenue, Myrtle and Millburn Avenues, Dorison Drive, and Canoe Brook and Browning Roads.

Trees and wires were reported downed on Park Road, Washington Avenue, Winthrop Road, Nottingham Road, Ferncliff Terrace and Baltusrol Way, Overlook Terrace, and Greenwood Drive.

Roads were closed on Brookside Drive between South Orange and Glen Avenues, Washington Avenue between Old Short Hills Road and Jefferson Avenue, Cypress Street between Myrtle and Glen Avenues, and Mt. Ararat Road.

A home on Browning Road reported no power.
