Hunger Crisis Networking Meeting Set for Jan. 29 at United Presbyterian Church in West Orange

WEST ORANGE, NJ - In September 2014, the United Presbyterian Church of West Orange presented "A Place at the Table," a compelling portrayal of the face of hunger in this country. Since then, the sequester forced millions more people off SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), Congress cut off long-term unemployment benefits, and the Senate has passed a Farm Bill that cuts "only" $4 billion from SNAP, while the house wants to cut $40 billion.

In the meantime, the Community FoodBank of NJ and local food pantries and soup kitchens are faced with even greater demands.

UPCWO stepped up the congregation's efforts at the Holy Trinity-West Orange Food Pantry in West Orange and the Clinton Avenue Presbyterian Church Soup kitchen, in addition to periodic workdays at CFBNJ and Christine's Kitchen in West Orange. We know we are not alone. Other individuals, congregations, and organizations are straining to deal with this growing crisis. We feel it is time to come together.

The community is invited to attend a Hunger Crisis Networking Meeting on Wednesday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m. at United Presbyterian Church of West Orange, located at 20 Old Indian Road in West Orange. We hope that strength in numbers and communication among those working to feed the hungry will start us on a journey leading to better policies and more effective actions.

If you or someone you know is concerned about the hunger situation in our country and especially in our community, please plan to attend the meeting so that we can network, strategize, and share opportunities for addressing immediate needs.

If you plan on attending, please RSVP to the church office via phone at 973-731-1868

We look forward to seeing you on January 29th.
