SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Extreme summer weather doesn't deter the South Orange Farmers' Market, where locals can find fresh produce and other summertime delights every Wednesday afternoon.

On a recent afternoon, vendors begin laying out produce about half an hour before the market was to open. The produce stayed cool underneath the tents, and each vendor had refrigerated trucks behind them in case produce needed to be moved back in.

Alstede Farms and Stony Hill Farms sold fruits and vegetables at this afternoon’s market. A Dr. Pickle tent stood in the corner of the parking lot where a vendor sold pickled vegetables and sauerkraut out of barrels that lined the front of the tent.

Across from Dr. Pickle’s tent was the Main Street Market manager selling Main Street Market t-shirts and answering any questions customers had about either the market or events going on in downtown South Orange.

While waiting for her vendor’s tent to arrive, South Orange resident Alyssa Aronson spoke about some of the events downtown South Orange holds in the summer and fall. She mentioned that South Orange holds the downtown after sundown concert series Friday and Saturday evenings from June to July. They had also had Celebrate South Orange, a family friendly carnival, craft fair, and concert on June 16. Aronson said the main point of all these local events is to bring the South Orange community together to appreciate all beautiful downtown South Orange has to offer.

The South Orange farmers market is open every Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. through Oct. 31 in the Sloan Street parking lot.
