Sparta, NJ- October is community helper month. During the past week, the preschool class of Hilltop Country Day School learned about community helpers. During this lesson visitors from the community came to discuss their roles.

Lieutenant Craig Wilson of the Sparta Fire Department visited the school on October 16. Wilson discussed elements of fire safety, including fire detectors, safe meeting places in an emergency and the precautions you should take when dealing with an emergency situation.

After a discussion in the classroom preschoolers were able to view, inspect and climb aboard “Crazy 8”, the Sparta Fire Department’s 1,000 gallon pumper truck. Wilson was also dressed in complete turn out gear to show the students how a fireman would look while in the truck.

On October 17, the preschool class listened to a lecture from Dr. Laura Sacks, a local dentist. Sacks taught the students about dental hygiene, the number of teeth in their mouths, and foods to benefit the health of their teeth.

Her discussion continued with an interactive component. Students were introduced to stuffed kangaroo with a full set of teeth. Each student was able to come to the front of the class and demonstrate their teeth brushing skills.

In addition, the preschool class had a visit from the school nurse and will be having a police officer and a stay at home mom come in to speak with them. These discussions allow for the community member to share their responsibilities and inform the students of their daily roles.
