LIVINGSTON, NJ - Hillside Elementary students took a look inside the creative process with Dan Gutman when he visited the school last week. Some said they found the experience “wacky.”

Gutman is the best-selling author The Genius Files and My Weird School series as well more than a hundred books, both fiction and nonfiction, and is best known for his funny, fast-paced children's series.

His latest book in The Genius Files came out in mid-January, taking readers once again on a wacky road trip to weird-but-true locations around America.

His My Weird School is up to 40 titles, and during the author visit with elementary students, he shared some of his own “weird writing tips.” Step No. 1: “Start with a bang!” Yes, he was talking about an explosion.

Media specialist Colleen Donnelly created an “interactive poster” – or Glog -- with pictures and texts, links and videos, for the author study.

I made this one for Dan Gutman because I wanted the students to really study him beyond just reading his books,” Mrs. Donnelly said. “The Glog allowed them to discover his website, his blog and interviews he has done in the past. The result was that they had much stronger questions for him during the Q&A portion of the presentation that reflected a more personal knowledge of his work and interests.”
