JERSEY CITY – After months of thinking, St. Peters Prep senior running back Jonathan Hilliman knew his college choice. In front of family, coaches, and teammates, Hilliman pulled a scarlet hat with a block ‘R’ and cheers erupted as New Jersey’s top back chose the home university Rutgers at James F. Keenan S.J. Field in Jersey City.
“I guess I gave a little clue with the rubber wrist bands I wore,” a composed Hilliman said after practice. “A few people noticed during practice, but they weren’t sure.”
The 6’1” 210-pound power back showed breakaway speed as he ran for 1471 yards (on 23 carries) and 21 touchdowns as a junior. Son of Plainfield sprinter (a member of the 1981 record-setting relay team) and former Franklin track coach Dorrell Hilliman, the younger strides past defenders once he hits the second level.
“I told him you don’t have to run everyone over,” Dorrell said. “You can get around them, the speed is there, but if they have you covered, give them what they came for drop the shoulder on them.”
