NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - With the state football finals coming up this Saturday, there has been much debate in the last five years regarding potential changes to how the state's football championships are awarded.

At the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Associations' annual business meeting in Edison on Monday, a verdict was finally reached.

In a statewide vote, membership schools of the NJSIAA ultimately turned down an appeal to have football programs play to a group champion.

"I am happy to report that the proposal was voted down by about 100 votes so playing down to one football champion is each Group will not take place," Livingston athletic director Patrick Genova said in an email to the Livingston community.

Additionally, the group turned down a motion to extend the fall sports season. Had the vote passed, fall sports would have began to practice on Aug. 11, 2014.  The new start date for 2014 fall sports is not known at this time.

This was the second vote in three years that the NJSIAA turned down a football championship-related proposal.
