WEST CALDWELL, NJ – Members of the James Caldwell High School (JCHS) National Honor Society, West Caldwell, organized the annual Pennies for Patients collection at the school, benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In total, the high school raised $1060.
Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country. The funds, collected during a three-week period in March and April, benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Organized by English teacher and National Honor Society advisor Christina Astorino, the Honor Society members collected and tallied the coins, keeping track by teacher by class, and on April 2, announced the winners.
In the Pennies for Patients campaign, the class collecting the most change in each school receives a pizza party. Prizes such as computers, electronics and sports equipment are presented to the top schools in each area.
This year, winners of the JCHS Pennies for Patients campaign are members of science teacher Marcia Renzetti’s AP Chemistry class, who will celebrate with a pizza party for collecting $279.68. Second place with the highest donation amount per student ($12.66) are teacher Amy Reszka’s math students who will celebrate with an ice cream party.
